Oct 9
The Planning Commission on Friday said it will soon set up a separate Independent Evaluation Office to assess the extent to which the government's flagship schemes are benefiting the poor.
Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia told reporters that the Plan panel is working towards the establishment of an Independent Evaluation Office for strengthening our evaluation system. He said the details are being worked out and would come out next month.
The structure of the Evaluation office to be set up with the
Commission would come up for deliberations at the International Conference on Development Evaluation. Mr Alhuwalia said, out of over 150 developmental schemes including 15 flagship schemes, the Evaluation office would pick up eight or 10 or 12 schemes for assessment.
Earlier, concerned over the progress of the government's flagship programmes, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has directed the Planning Commission to embark upon a fact finding mission if these are benefiting the people in states. The Prime Minister has asked the Planning Commission to depute senior officers to visit states where results are not forthcoming.
