Sameer Verma in Semi-Finals of BWF World Junior Badminton Championships-2011

Indian junior badminton champion Sameer Verma has reached the semi-finals of the BWF World Junior Championships 2011 that is being held at Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) from 2-Nov-2011 to 6-Nov-2011.

Sameer Verma, who was seeded 3/4 at the start of the tournament, has done justice to his seeding, having reached the last 4 stage of the competition with relative ease not having dropped a set so far in any of his matches. In fact, not only Sameer, but all all the top 4 seeds in the Men's Singles event have managed to reach the semi-finals and now will be vying for the top honour.

Sameer defeated Ka Long Ng of Hong Kong 21-15, 21-16 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis.

The World Junior badminton championship is held by the BWF (Badminton World Federation) every year, and is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious events on the junior badminton circuit. The championship is known to bring into limelight the stars of the future who will shine on the senior badminton circuit also.

Only one Indian, Saina Nehwal, has ever been able to become the World Junior champion. She has achieved this memorable feat in the year 2008. Sameer who had reached the finals of the Asian Youth badminton championship earlier this year is only 2 wins away from emulating Saina's feat. Whether he can manage to do this will be clear in only a couple of days.

In the women's singles India's major badminton hope P.V Sindhu went down in round 3 (the last 32 stage). She went down to Yuki Fukushima of Japan, who incidentally had also defeated her in the BWF World Junior Team Championships -2011, that was held just before this individual championship tournament.

While PV Sindhu lost track in round 3, Tanvi Lad managed to do slightly better, before going down in the last 16 stage in round 4 against the tournament's top seed and world no. 13 Inthanon Ratchanok of Thailand. Gauri Ghate was defeated in round 3 by seeded Japanese player Nozomi Okuhara who has reached the semi-finals. India's doubles challenge has also come to an end, and now the eyes of Indian badminton fans are focussed on how Sameer Verma performs in his next matches.
