Quality Badminton Set
65Badminton Set
Badminton is a game loved the world over. Although played mostly at beaches and barbeques in the United States, it is one of the world?s most popular sports with high levels of competition stretching all the way to the Olympic stage. Personally, my love for the sport was born in the badminton elective course I took at university, and I became a more avid player during my time living in Asia. I would have to say that badminton is much more popular in Asia. Upon my return to the United States I decided to purchase a badminton set as I could find no facilities in my area for badminton games. As I have done before, I went the cheap route and bought an inferior set. After being frustrated with my Wilson badminton set I decided to purchase a good one. Here is what you should be looking for in badminton sets.
The Racquet
It is important to get a good carbon fibre racquet. Cheaper and older sets often have racquets made of aluminum or steel. These are no good. They are flimsy and hard to control. A good racquet is made of carbon fibre because it is light weight yet very stiff, giving it good kinetic energy transfer. Traditionally badminton racquets were oval shaped, put popular contemporary racquets preferred by players have an isometric head (see photo). Quality racquets weigh approximately 80-90 grams including the strings. It is also very handy if a bag is included.
The Strings
While thicker strings are more durable, most players prefer the feel offered by thinner strings. However, preference for tension of the strings varies from player to player. It is said that tighter strings improve control, whereas low string tension improves power. A player is best off experimenting to find out which they like best.
The Shuttlecock
The shuttlecock or ?birdie? comes in two types, feathered and synthetic. Feathered shuttlecocks are made up of a cone topped with sixteen feathers. These are the best kind and are used in competition. Synthetic ones are often used by recreational players as the feathers tend to break easily. Synthetic shuttlecocks are more durable and cost less.
The Net
Although badminton can be enjoyed without a net, it is much more fun to play with an official size net. Quality sets came with durable aluminum poles to set up the net with. However, these poles are often hard to set firmly in the ground. I have solved this problem by getting two steel poles and setting the bottoms of them in concrete. A badminton volleyball set will usually include a heavy durable net.
Well, that?s all there is to getting a quality 4 player badminton set, racquets, shuttlecocks and a net. For more information, check out the United States Badminton Association.
